Tax Return Preparers Scheme – What does it mean?
TRPs stand for “Tax Return Preparers Scheme” is a scheme launched by the Government of India to train unemployed and partially employed persons to assist small and medium taxpayers in preparing their returns of income. Cost of the training will be borne by the income tax department. Individuals who complete the training successfully will be issued a certificate and a unique identification number which will authorize them under the Income Tax Act, 1961 to work as self employed Tax Return Preparers
Tax Return Preparers – Who are they
Tax Return Preparers (TRPs) are also called as “ quasi tax professionals” are individuals certified by the Income Tax Department to act as Tax Return Preparers and assist various people in filing their IT Returns. TRPs can file income tax for individuals/HUFs whose accounts are not required to be audited ( called eligible person). If the ‘eligible person’ is not a resident in India during the previous year relevant to the assessment year, he/she can not avail of the services of a TRPs.
Filing your return through Tax Return Preparers (TRPs) – Complete process
Before you decide to file your tax through TRPs check the following -
- Your eligibility to file your returns by TRPs
- Provide your consent to the TRPs that he/she will prepare tax returns for you
- Verify the facts mentioned in the return are true and correct before you sign it
- Certify the amount which has been paid to the Tax Return Preparer for preparing and furnishing of the return of income
